Located next to Marngoneet Correctional Centre, Karreenga Correctional Centre is a 216-bed, restricted medium security prison campus designed and built on a greenfield site. The name Karreenga, which means ‘to grow,’ was given by an elder from the Wathaurong tribe.
The design includes cottage style accommodation blocks, administration and reception facilities, visitors centre, prisoner reception, medical, education and programs facilities. It also includes industries, stores and prisoner recreation facilities. Karreenga supports the neighbouring prisons in the precinct.
The prisoner accommodation consists of single and double storey buildings, which are self-catering. They form the perimeter of an open style campus with horticultural and outdoor recreational facilities in the middle.
Documented and delivered within an ambitious 2.5 year timeframe, Karreenga also includes a fully supervised bakery, which equips prisoners with the employment and training skills required to reintegrate into society upon release.
