Designed to reflect modern construction and manufacturing environments, the trades hub provides a best practice learning environment with the flexibility to support RMIT’s expanding practical learning programs.

Commencing with masterplanning, Foreground was engaged by RMIT University to develop a masterplan and feasbility study to test siting of a new three stage trades training hub complex to deliver 16,000m2 GFA over two levels to support educational programs for over 1,000 students across trade training programs at the RMIT Bundoora East campus.

Following the Feasibility Study and Masterplanning phase, Foreground was engaged to design and document Stage 1 – the first Innovation Centre provides flexible and semi permanent trade zones, informal learning, outdoor training area, training rig and roof training areas.

Providing fit-for-purpose educational spaces, the new RMIT Trades & Innovation Centre at Bundoora East is a pivotal step in the growth of the College of Vocational Education. With demand rapidly increasing for contemporary trades, clean economy, and related industry programs, this state-of-the-art facility addresses the need for expanded teaching and learning environments to support the next generation of skilled workers in Melbourne’s northern corridor.

Collaborating closely with RMIT and Builder Alchemy, the Foreground team executed a comprehensive scope of works, including civil works, services upgrades, landscaping, and construction on a greenfield site. The facility features unique and purpose-built elements, such as a 2.5m-deep sandpit, a three-storey training rig, welding bays, flexible teaching spaces, and outdoor zones, to enable the simulation and teaching of complex trades.

Designed to reflect modern construction and manufacturing environments, the trades hub provides a best practice learning environment with the flexibility to support RMIT’s expanding practical learning programs. The RMIT Trades Innovation Centre represents a significant investment in the future of vocational education, equipping students with the tools, spaces, and experiences necessary to thrive in evolving industries.

From our client:
